Microchipping
Microchiping is becoming more common among horse owners to help with search and recovery of our loved horse pets during post-disaster situations or even theft circumstances. It serves as a permanent identification device as well as proof of ownership.
It is the fastest way of finding the owner of a lost horse and returning him or her safely to her home or to obtaining permission to proceed with medical care if the horse is found in need of it during or after a disaster situation as the owner can be quickly identified and contacted.

It is a fairly inexpensive way of having peace of mind that your horse has a much greater chance of being better taken care of if an uneventful situation occurs. All humane society groups, most small animal clinics and more and more equine and large animal clinics have available the scanners to identify lost horses. The same equipment is used for dogs, cats, horses, and all other animals.
It is a non-painful and quick procedure done on the left side of the horse’s neck. At Northwest Equine Veterinary Associates the AVID® Equine MicroChip ID system is used.
