Semen collection, analysis and shipping
Stallions can be trained to be artificially collected using an in heat mare or by use of a collection dummy. Once semen is collected it can be used fresh, or temporarily cooled (1-4 days) for storing and/or shipping, or it can be frozen for long term-storing. Each of these processes has their advantages and disadvantages and requires specific equipment, handling and management of the semen and mares intended to be bred.
The stallion’s semen should be analyzed for concentration, alive percentage, progressive motility and morphology of sperm. All together this can provide important information as to the quality of the semen and assist in calculating the correct dilution the semen requires for best storage and for optimal insemination dosages so that chances of pregnancy rates can be increased as best as possible.
