Ultrasonography/Ultrasound
Soft tissue structures such as muscle, tendons and ligaments are better evaluated by ultrasound exam. Common conditions that affect horses where ultrasonography can be of value are:
- Bowed tendons (deep digital flexor and superficial digital flexor tendonitis)
- Suspensory ligament and check ligament desmitis
- Annular ligament thickening (around the fetlocks)
- Bursitis (elbow)
- Fibrotic myopathies (scar tissue in muscle)
- Any muscle or tendon that has suffered trauma, swelling, scar tissue or hematomas (bruising)

Dr. Latimer performing tendon ultrasonography
Northwest Equine Veterinary Associates has three state-of-the-art ultrasound machines. For tendon and ligament imaging we use an ultra modern Medison PICO portable ultrasound Spectral, Wave Doppler and Freehand 3D machine and 7 – 10 MHz probe. Images can be stored digitally for owner and veterinary records.
