Upper airway endoscopy
Upper airway disorders such as laryngeal hemiplegea (roarer’s syndrome) and dorsal displacement of the soft palate are common causes of poor performance in some equestrian modalities, particularly those that require high speed. Other less common abnormalities such as cysts, tumors and infections can also be found and cause significant performance impairment. These can be diagnosed by use of endoscopy of the larynx and pharynx (internal throat area). A portable 1 meter scope and an ultra-modern 3 meter videoendoscope are available at Northwest Equine for use when these conditions are suspected.
